You’ll notice I mention fun in the sun in the title of this post.
That is because I remain convinced that there must be some kind of cosmic balance that will result in the most perfect British Summer, starting somewhere around, oooh, now, and ending at the end of September. This will be our payback for 4 months of freezing temperatures, snow and sleet.
Should that prediction (nay, lets call it fact. I am, after all, never wrong. Fact) come true then there are many exciting events and festivals going on this Summer.
Most excitingly the first annual Vintage festival at Goodwood will be taking place on the weekend of the 13-15th August.
The brainchild of Wayne & Gerardine Hemingway (founders of Red or Dead) and Lord March (the mastermind behind the Festival of Speed & Goodwood Revival) the festival is designed to celebrate 50 years of British culture, bringing together music, fashion, design and retail. There will be a main stage and 5 on site “clubs” designed to recreate each of the 5 decades from the 40s to the 80s. This will mean you can take your pick from everything from burlesque to roller discos to while away your evenings in style.
There will be a vintage High Street where you can enjoy afternoon tea from real china cups, vintage ice cream vans for sweet refreshments, a vintage beauty salon to ensure you look your very best for the evenings entertainments and a fun fair where you can go on the kind of rides that someone with a new hair do and a tummy full of tea, cake and ice cream should probably avoid.
The event will also see the launch of Lily Allens new vintage clothing store Lucy in Disguise which will have a store on the High Street.
The festival is supposed to be along the lines of The Festival of Britain in 1951. I am quite insanely excited about the concept which just seems so refreshingly different from the average wallowing in mud, leggings and wellies fare of the British festival season that I’ve avoided ever since I nearly drowned in mud at Glastonbury in 1997. Wayne Hemingway says:
” We have carefully curated a celebratory festival in complete contrast to this staid status quo, that re-unites music, fashion and culture; that is unashamedly about dressing up rather than down and being comfortable rather than compromised. There has been nothing to date like Vintage.”
There are even a range of glam camping options, if you’re feeling flush (I still can’t say glamping, it feels weird) all of which include a bacon sandwich and cup of tea breakfast delivery service.
All I need now is to save up some money to buy tickets before they’re all sold out……(what are the chances?)
