Retro Chick Style Icon: Nigella Lawson

I LOVE Nigella Lawson.

And frankly she’s long overdue for adding to the ranks of the Retro Chick style icons. She’s on my mind at the moment as I just used some Amazon vouchers to buy her new book, though I’m not sure how happily that will sit with yesterdays avowed resolution to lose weight.

There’s no denying that Nigella Lawson is a beautiful woman. Flawless skin, glossy hair and symmetrical features hardly make her an outsider in the world of feminine good looks.

What she has that sets her apart, though, are 2 things.

Firstly, her personality, which shines through in every picture and every episode of her TV show. She’s the only TV chef who’s recipes I’ve actually used after watching her show, and not only that, they’re a half hour escape into a world that’s almost exactly like this one, but more glamorous. There’s meetings, and rushing out of the house in the morning for work, but all infused with a special bit of Nigella sparkle.

Secondly, or course, there’s those astonishing hour glass curves. It’s obvious that Nigella really loves food, it’s her job, and people who really like food don’t weigh 7 stone. She’s taken some serious stick for her size with BBC message board comments describing her as “a porker” and asking what kind of example she was setting. I think she loves herself and is happy in who she is, and that’s an example that everyone can learn from.

I have no idea what Nigella weighs, but I can’t imagine describing her as a porker. Both her personality and her shape are voluptuous and sensual. I wouldn’t advocate gluttony and obesity as a way of life, but I love that Nigella is shining light to prove that you can be gloriously sexy and fanciable regardless of the number on the scales.

She also knows how to dress those curves for maximum effect, and, no doubt, knows the power of proper underwear!

Nigella Lawson seems to know what suits her and she doesn’t deviate from that for the whims of fashion. It’s a classic style, sometimes a little too classic maybe, but it’s achievable and makes the most of her not inconsiderable assets.

Scoop neck tops, cashmere cardigans, pencil dresses and black trousers. They’re wardrobe basics and though they might not set the fashion world alight, on Nigella they look luxurious and glamorous.

When I grow up I hope to be just like Nigella. Confident, glamorous, gloriously sensual.

Though I still won’t be soaking my Christmas Turkey in buckets of brine.

Another fan here too! My teenage sons lust after her as well so she really does appeal to all sexes/ages.
I dip in and out of her books regularly and always give in and make her fabulous cheese risotto on cold days, it’s so yummy!
Wouldn’t be too hasty to not try brined turkey; we went to a very good friend for Thanksgiving Dinner last year and she had a splendid one. It really was very, very tasty. Wouldn’t want it for Christmas dinner mind, but it is a nice alternative. Just thought I would mention it šŸ™‚

Glad you got the book!! Love how we are all blogging about this gorgeous creature! x

51? seriously? (!!!!!!!!!) She’s stunning and hooray for voluptuous beauty like hers. And her chocolate fudge cake is the most amazing thing I have ever seen. One day I will find that recipe, bake it and eat it all by myself, wearing a stunning dress and who gives a **** šŸ™‚

Ooooh, I LOVE her too!!! And yeah, I also just wanna cook whatever she makes. What a beaut!

I can’t believe she’s 51! FIFTY ONE?! My word! I love this lady!

I also did Nigella as my style icon earlier today – how funny.
Needless to say that I adore her.

A beautiful woman who loves her food, I salute her.

She’s 51?????? FIFTY ONE!!! I wish I looked like that NOW and I’m only 30.

I totally love Nigella, and her innuendos! I make her Christmas cake every year, although I’ll never confess where my recipe is from! I want to look like her when I’m 50 rather than the ever so health McKeith woman. Hurrah for chocolate if that’s how you turn out – and being happy with who you are!

I love her, too! Great choice for a style icon. She is as sensual as her food; even though she is the male fantasy of great cook and great look she still manages to capture our female hearts as well. She’s amazing.

Oh yes, I have to agree. Nigella is wonderfully glamorous and curvy and a fabulous cook! My husband bought me the Nigella Christmas book for Christmas, but I’m not sure whether it was for my benefit or his lol.

i love her! i watch her show everyday! she turned 51 yesterday!

I LOVE her. I have to say I was thinking when you said ‘What she has that sets her apart, though, are 2 things’, you were going to follow it up with boobies. šŸ˜€

I think it’s her confidence that I love so much, and her passion for the thing that she loves the most. I wish everyone was so eloquent.

I think she looks fabulous, there is something very wrong with the world if someone who looks like that is described as a porker, or maybe the commentators prefer women who look like small boys…..

Anyhoo, my husband also loves her, though I suspect that is also figure related!!

I love her- although in recent series her double entendres have become more and more obvious. Mind you, they’re a bit of fun and it’s lovely that she doesn’t take herself too seriously (although Valentine warner take note… it’s chucklesome and cute when Nigella does it- when you do it, it’s creepy man! Stop harassing that mushroom picker and brush your hair man!). Heh heh, little rant there.

She’s larger than life in personality and (it must be said) possibly overweight if you go by BMI. However you can tell from her skin, hair etc’ that she eats ‘proper’ food and in this world where health is only equated with weight we’ve lost sight of the fact that a BMI under 24 through plastic food and fags is unhealthy, whereas a bigger person who feasts on whole food, doesn’t smoke and is moderate in booze – Nigella for example- is probably more healthy. So I’d say yes, she’s a good example.

I know not everyone likes her, some think that she has become a parody of herself. But I L.O.V.E -love Nigella. And have done since forever. She is the empitome of womanhood, class and an educated mind, combined in a kickass figure.
The book is full of yummysome things – enjoy!

they called her a “porker”? For god’s sake, what is wrong with the world?!

I have just been getting into Nigella’s recipes recently and they are so accessible. I totally get what you mean, there is something very natural about her – both in looks and approach.

And there’s nothing porker about her – she has a fabulous figure!

I have to agree. Nigella has a wonderful, womanly figure.

I love Nigella I have a photo of her inside my wardrobe – is that sad? I think not she is beautiful and a lovely person x

No, that’s fabulous! If I had a wardrobe door I might do the same.

I might put her on my fridge instead šŸ˜€
