Day Six – Folio copy of All Quiet on the Western Front

Behind todays advent calendar door is a beautiful illustrated Folio Society copy of All Quiet on the western front.

The Folio Society believe books should be as beautiful as they are interesting and produce gorgeous editions of all sorts of classic books that make beautiful gifts. This copy of All Quiet on the western front is bound in cloth and printed with a design based on a photograph of a bombed street at Fort Souville, 1916.

The book was published in 1929 and was based on the authors own experiences in the trenches during WWI. It is the most famous German anti war novel, and this edition is translated into English by Brian Murdoch.

Hello, I’ve been a long time stalker of your blog, so I feel a bit of a fraud for only commenting now.

My favourite book that I’ve read this year would have to be Irina Baronova’s ‘Ballet, Life and Love’. It’s pretty much unheard of, but it is the autobiography of a once well known Ballerina. The ballerina – Irina Baronova – had a pretty fascinating life – she lived through the Russian revolution and then two World wars, alongside civil wars in various countries – as well as being married twice, and all the while dancing professionally. A lot of famous faces make an appearance (Grace Kelly, Shirley Temple, Vivien Leigh… to name a few), alongside well known ballet dancers (think Baryshnikov et all). Overall it is a completely fascinating book, and it includes some lovely photos part way through.

    Happy Christmas. 🙂

Flashman and the Mountain of Light – full of political in-correctness and brilliant!
The bawdy, caddish adventures of Harry Flashman have entertained me for a few years now. They’re so crammed with history I’d never normally pick up on and this was an eye-opener on the facts of the Indian/British war in 1800s. It’s a book that makes you cry and laugh out loud – not at the same time though.

My favorite book this year has been an old book that a friend let me borrow. His name is Elric and he’s named after the main character in the book. It’s called Elric of Melniboné by Michael Moor. It is set in a far away land much like The Lord of the Rings series and I couldn’t put it down! Tales of love that can not be, magic, a tortured soul, and a quest for revenge. The best part is they are short stories but they all slowly tie in with bits and pieces leading to the end of his quest. I’m on the second book right now and I’m not done with it yet but the first is amazing and the second is really living up to it too!

I’ve also found that I’m a fan of agatha raisin books, much to my surprise. Its certainly not my usual reading style but that the beauty of the kindle.

I read Nella Last’s War and really enjoyed it, but her later ones are a bit sadder. And I’m ashamed to say I enjoyed the Hunger Games books, at least so I understand what people are talking about.

Has to be Jasper FForde – One of our Thursdays is Missing – but for best effect you’d need to start with The Eyre Affair and read through the series. Publisers Weekly described it as “James Bond meets Harry Potter in the Twilight Zone” – the series is clever, funny and absolutely addictive.

That’s easy – Miranda Hart’s new book “Is it me?” I giggled and snorted all the way through it. I rationed myself to a chapter a night because I knew I would be disappointed when I got to the end and couldn’t have my daily fix of Miranda any more. One of the things Miranda advocates in the book is ‘galloping’ as a way of relieving stress … I was staying in a hotel in Swansea with my husband the night I read that chapter, and yes, I did gallop down the hotel corridor the next morning, and yes, it was therapeutic and yes, my husband did capture the moment on video .. it was one of those times when I wish technology hadn’t come such a long way; whose bright idea was it to incorporate video recording capabilities into mobiles anyway? Silly idea!
