The Many Poses of Retro Chick

I’ve been writing a “fashion” blog for over 6 years now.

When I say “fashion” what I mean, of course, is “Personal Style”. When I very first started I attempted to care about trends, because I thought that’s what I *should* do, then I realised I didn’t care about them, so I stopped writing about them and started taking photos of my outfits and writing fantasy shopping lists instead.

As outfit bloggers go I’m not particularly prolific, prone as I am to wearing the same thing over and over until it falls apart, so I try not to bore you daily. But still, when you’ve been taking photos of your outfits for 6 years, you amass quite a lot of photos. Last week I was scrolling casually through a Facebook album of outfit photos, and I noticed with some small degree of embarrassment that I appear to have developed a repertoire of frequently repeated poses that I use over and over again. In my head each of these poses is totally casual and of the moment, but apparently that’s not the case.

So, for no reason other than I happened to have noticed them, these appear to be my top poses!

The Fishwife

A photographer once told me I shouldn’t stand with both hands on my hips as it would make me look like a fishwife. I have been ignoring that for 6 years. Both hands on hips, stand slightly sideways, pop a hip and a big grin is my “go to” pose, apparently.

I’m a Little Teapot

To mix it up a bit, I take one hand off my hip and rest it casually on a nearby wall or fence. Failing that I’ll just drop the other hand to my side or brush it through my hair, all casual like. Occasionally combined with “Do You Like My Skirt” (see below)

Do You Like My Skirt?

Well do you? Look it’s really full and I can flap it around. Occasionally combined with “I’m a Little Teapot” (see above) for a one handed skirt flap.

The Casual Lean

Because I was just hanging around, leaning against this wall/table/fence and a photo got casually snapped. Not posing, oh no.

I Forgot You Were There

Oh, sorry, did you have a camera? I was just examining this patch of floor/looking over my shoulder/checking my skirt for bits of fluff.

The One Legged Fashion Blogger

If all else fails, stand on one leg.

I can’t be the only one? Do you have go to poses? What else can I do to mix it up a bit when I take outfit photos?

Haha, love it! My go-to seems to be “I’m Looking to the Left” : I always feel stupid just grinning at the camera, so I look off to the left, resulting in probably hundreds of photos, all with exactly the same pose! I’m sure my readers must wonder what’s hiding out of shot that I’m always so fascinated with!

I’m always looking off to one side. My face is just too round for full-on, full-frontal face!

haha I do all of these poses! But I like to add the blink just as the photo is being taken šŸ˜›

You’re definitely not the only one!! I am seriously guilty of the ‘I forgot you were there’ pose… especially while looking down and to the left. But hey, sometimes we just find our natural pose calling and mine is to keep my face quite far away from the camera if possible… and hopefully in the process disguising double chin and the fact I’m probably blinking.

The ‘sweeping this bit of hair from my face pose is quite popular chez Manc Vintage as is a twirling skirt shot (normally post-prosecco!) šŸ™‚

I love your poses. And being so photogenic, no one would have noticed you do only a handful of poses. My favourite has to be ‘do you like my skirt?’ šŸ™‚ x

Ha! I had to go look through my blog to see what my standard poses were after I read your list! I’m quite fond of the Fishwife and the I Forgot You Were There… looking at the camera can be so awkward! I also like the “Look at my petticoats!” and the twirl. I tend to intersperse a few detail shots of any outfit to break up the poses… because really, there are only so many options!

This has really made me smile! x

Oh gosh, these made me laugh!! I am guilty of doing exactly the same things, which I’ve only just realised from looking at a week’s worth of selfies, and realised that my legs are in the same position to within millimetres. Ah well, they’re tried and tested!
