I’ve got lots of lovely Christmas memories, and many funny ones, but there’s one everyone loves at my expense!

It was Bess, our dog’s, second Christmas with us; she trotted to my grandparents’ house with us, getting a complete Christmas dinner from her Nanny! We later found her in the living room, legs in the air, belly bulging, blowing off as she did a Boa Constrictor impression!

Anyway, crucial info – you need to know that my dear Granddad always called me The Babe (Baby, not sex bomb!).

My sister had been taking photos, and as she went to put her camera away, Granddad said “No, wait! There’s a photo I’ve got to have”. Getting up, he says “I’ve got to have a photo with the Baby”. Aww, I thought, that’s sweet, plus a little variation on my pet name.. GranGran appears by my chair, I put my smile on, put my arm around him, he leans down to my level…

And picks up the dog! Moving away from me so I wouldn’t be in their snap, kissing her head and saying “I had to get a picture with my best girl”. Best girl?! Had she dressed up? Had she bought gifts? Had she donned her paper cracker crown to show we were being festive?! No she had not! She had just farted a lot and laid about a lot. Oh, and humiliated me. Humph.

Granddad was oblivious to why they were laughing at me, which made it even funnier.

Now, every time it appears, the photo has everyone in tears at the memory. And it’s a great reminder of qualities my now late Granddad had: unbelievable kindness, liked to surprise people, adored animals, kept us laughing to the last, and always supported his Babe through anything.

And how he loved Christmas – presents, especially seeing our happiness, FOOD!!!!, but most of all, just being with his family, all sat together, laughing, living, loving

Christmas Eve is the best thing about Xmas, the anticipation, the gifts under the tree, the kids excited about Santa, the quiet calm before the family frenzy of Christmas Day where you can just bask in the festive feel

  10. My favourite thing about christmas is watching my children unwrap their presents although this year the new addition to the family will probably rather play with the boxes and paper! Bless her lol and ofcourse having a “little” tipple , sausagemeat stuffing, tunis cake, sweeties…oh the list goes on! I love christmas, why cant it be christmas every day? (although this would be an expensive life! lol)

I love the fact that people are generally friendlier and more charitable at Christmas. Except for hunters on Boxing Day-why we still tolerate this abhorrent cruelty is beyond me.

  13. Midnight service on Christmas eve. It’s magical in itself and then I love the chats we have driving home with my family. When we get back we drink champagne and eat smoked salmon on soda bread. That’s when I know I am home. Happy Christmas!

  14. says: Louise Blackah

It’s the anticipation of Christmas that we enjoy, thinking of presents for people, wrapping them in anticipation of the unwrapping, then dressing the tree and hubby putting lights up. Little nibbles start appearing when we start watching the Christmas films. Then arranging who is coming for the big day, what we will eat etc. It’s the whole package as they say.

  15. says: Celiamay

I love the Christmas calm, smiling at people you don’t know during a Boxing Day walk, the crisp air and a moment of peace – it’s there if we make it!

  16. says: Sheila Reavy

I love the Christmas tree and the look of wonder on the kids faces the first time the lights get switched on.

People and family getting together & spending time with my niece who comes over the week before and helps me wrap presents, it has become a “new” & lovely tradition.

  23. says: Kate Phillips

I still get excited when it comes to the time all the Christmas trees go up – it takes me back to when I was little and we’d drive around looking for the best ones so there’s lots of family memories too.

  24. says: Debbie Skerten

My favourite thing about Christmas is putting the decorations up and singing along to all the Christmas CD’s xx

  25. says: Ann Gwillim

I love Christmas, with all the family around then on Boxing day just the two of us & the dogs. Left over turkey for lunch then a stroll round the park with our wonderful dogs. Evening all settled round a log fire dogs with their Chrissie presents bones & toys & me and hubby with a nice glass of wine. Pure bliss!

  26. says: claire blaney

seeing all the pretty decorations everywhere they are stunning and thats what makes it feel like christmas to me.

  27. says: Sue Cranfield

When we were kids on Christmas eve we couldn’t sleep our father used to say father Christmas wont come if your still awake which didn’t help as that had us kids laughing as other kids told us there was no santa !! then he would throw handfuls of stones onto the roof saying it was the reindeer and sleigh landing on our roof for years we believed him and there was a Santa still makes me smile when I think of it 🙂

  28. says: Carly Wright

This time of year my cats are bonkers! They are either sat in front of the fire, stealing the heat, or tripping everyone up OR destroying the tree. I awoke two days ago to one cat covered in tinsel and the other in glitter!? Now, I bet you ask yourself why don’t we just move the decorations higher up the tree!? Well, you see, that doesn’t work either. They climb it. I suppose it would be a shame for us to remove the tree as they clearly love it so, and we only use plastic baubles, so I guess I just have to put up with the mess, smile, laugh and drink wine. Merry Christmas all, I hope it’s as fun as mine <3

  29. says: liz ferguson

All of the little things …like the homemade presents, spending time with loved-ones. And it’s always lovely because everyone is in a festive mood!

  33. says: Julie Booth

I LOVE Christmas! I have just put up my tree, and love wrapping the presents and going Xmas shopping, but best of all is Xmas Eve when the whole family is super- excited about the Big man himself coming in the morning!

  34. At 62 years old I have seen many Christmas days but the best were less commercial and more family orientated. When the kids were young my sister and I decided to ‘do Xmas together to cut down on costs’ we played pass the parcel and gave one thoughtful gift to each person…. We still follow this tradition love love love it…

  35. says: Krzysia

I love to wake early, go outside and take in the beauty of the morning. Chocolates for breakfast then a trip to Church to celebrate Christ’s birthday:-)

  36. says: Christine Smith

OK, know this is a cop out but I love everything about Christmas – however, Christmas Eve has to be my favourite day of the year, when the shops finally close and there are carols on the radio and it is almost like the world is holding its breath…
And I got ‘Luxury’ on the quiz 🙂

  37. says: Debbie Southwell

My favourite thing is snuggling up with my family watching festive films with the christmas tree lights twinkling. The other great thing is entering advent competitions and coming across great pages and blogs such as yours that I wouldn’t have otherwise found

  38. says: Nicole Stanfield Caile

I love making sparkly reindeer food with my daughter! We mix oats and different colours of glitter together and put them in a special bag. On Christmas Eve we leave a trail of the reindeer food on our driveway so Santa’s reindeer can spot our house from the sky. On Christmas morning my little girl loves to run outside and see if the reindeer have eaten the oats!

  39. says: thekiwibex

Michael Buble singing Christmas songs (sadly not in person), a glass of bubbly, and a crackling fire (which for us, due to not actually having a fireplace, means a Youtube video of a fireplace on the TV!).

  41. says: Sarah Jones

My favourite thing about Christmas is having all the family coming around, having Turkey dinner with all the trimmings then sitting in front of the TV talking about anything and everything with a few drinks in hand!

  42. says: Joanna

Finally got my Christmas tree yesterday!! We went to get a smallish one that could sit on a little table, high enough so that the dogs couldn’t get near it, but as always we ended up with a much bigger one which we had to cut a bit off to be able to get the fairy on the top!!!
It might be big but it’s a gorgeous tree and decorating it last night really got me in the festive mood!!

  43. says: lisa williams

I love watching my friends and family open their presents I really try to get the perfect thing for each person and buying gifts for people is my fave thing to do 🙂

The anticipation is the best part for me. I absolutely adore Christmas Eve spent doing last minute sorting of gifts whilst drinking prosecco and eating my own body weight in cheese. I know that the following day will be an absolute whirlwind of excitement, wrapping paper and chocolate and I will love every second but the minutes on Christmas morning waiting for my daughter to wake up and for it all to start are the greatest.

You would think that as I approach (erm…) my ‘middle years’ I would have grown out of christmas, especially since I don’t have kids. But what I really love these days, as we embrace social media and digital life is the way you get to see how everyone else celebrates the day, and what great things are happening in the community especially in relation to giving and caring for the less fortunate. I think that’s what I always loved about christmas – the community spirit and knowing that everywhere people were participating in the rituals of christmas – but now you really can feel part of something bigger and I love that.
