For many years I sneered at Straighteners.

I hated that pancake straight flat hair look and figured that was all they were good for. Then people started to use them to make those beachy curls, and I didn’t really want them either.

Back in 2012 I was sent some straighteners to review and discovered they did indeed have other uses, though I still didn’t use them much, until I took up Roller Derby.

I don’t like to wash my hair too often as it fades colour and isn’t great for it, however being stuffed under a helmet 2 or 3 times a week does not make for happy bouncy hair, and I soon discovered that as well as adding curls or straightening long hair, you can use ghds to refresh shorter hair like my bob as well.

ghd recently offered to send me one of their new Platinum stylers, which is supposed to be kinder to coloured hair, so it seemed like a good opportunity to share exactly how I use straighteners to refresh my one length bob. So I made another video! Gasp! This is almost becoming a habit!

Refresh a Bob using straighteners

You basically use the straighteners to add volume at the roots and curl to the ends, and then use a round brush to shape it while it’s warm. Separating the hair into smaller sections means you get more bounce at the roots as you can get closer to the scalp.

The ghd Platinum is a little shorter and easier to control than my existing pair, which means they are perfect for styling shorter hair. They also have a REALLY long cord, which means I don’t have to sit right next to a plug socket, because they’re NEVER near the mirrors are they?

I had my hair coloured on Monday, and haven’t washed my hair since. Last night I was at Roller Derby practice so had my hair stuffed under a helmet. It is now Friday, so it’s been 4 days since I last washed my hair and as you can see at the start of the video it’s gone quite flat.

Using the straighteners gives it enough oomph to get me through another day, so I’ll probably wash it tomorrow afternoon.

I know this is pretty specific to styling a bob, but for those of you with longer hair the same technique can be used to add some bounce to the roots, and if you have shorter hair take a look at how I do my fringe!
