I’ve got lots of lovely Christmas memories, and many funny ones, but there’s one everyone loves at my expense!

It was Bess, our dog’s, second Christmas with us; she trotted to my grandparents’ house with us, getting a complete Christmas dinner from her Nanny! We later found her in the living room, legs in the air, belly bulging, blowing off as she did a Boa Constrictor impression!

Anyway, crucial info – you need to know that my dear Granddad always called me The Babe (Baby, not sex bomb!).

My sister had been taking photos, and as she went to put her camera away, Granddad said “No, wait! There’s a photo I’ve got to have”. Getting up, he says “I’ve got to have a photo with the Baby”. Aww, I thought, that’s sweet, plus a little variation on my pet name.. GranGran appears by my chair, I put my smile on, put my arm around him, he leans down to my level…

And picks up the dog! Moving away from me so I wouldn’t be in their snap, kissing her head and saying “I had to get a picture with my best girl”. Best girl?! Had she dressed up? Had she bought gifts? Had she donned her paper cracker crown to show we were being festive?! No she had not! She had just farted a lot and laid about a lot. Oh, and humiliated me. Humph.

Granddad was oblivious to why they were laughing at me, which made it even funnier.

Now, every time it appears, the photo has everyone in tears at the memory. And it’s a great reminder of qualities my now late Granddad had: unbelievable kindness, liked to surprise people, adored animals, kept us laughing to the last, and always supported his Babe through anything.

And how he loved Christmas – presents, especially seeing our happiness, FOOD!!!!, but most of all, just being with his family, all sat together, laughing, living, loving

It’s the anticipation of Christmas that we enjoy, thinking of presents for people, wrapping them in anticipation of the unwrapping, then dressing the tree and hubby putting lights up. Little nibbles start appearing when we start watching the Christmas films. Then arranging who is coming for the big day, what we will eat etc. It’s the whole package as they say.

  • Carly Wright December 14, 2014

This time of year my cats are bonkers! They are either sat in front of the fire, stealing the heat, or tripping everyone up OR destroying the tree. I awoke two days ago to one cat covered in tinsel and the other in glitter!? Now, I bet you ask yourself why don’t we just move the decorations higher up the tree!? Well, you see, that doesn’t work either. They climb it. I suppose it would be a shame for us to remove the tree as they clearly love it so, and we only use plastic baubles, so I guess I just have to put up with the mess, smile, laugh and drink wine. Merry Christmas all, I hope it’s as fun as mine <3

You would think that as I approach (erm…) my ‘middle years’ I would have grown out of christmas, especially since I don’t have kids. But what I really love these days, as we embrace social media and digital life is the way you get to see how everyone else celebrates the day, and what great things are happening in the community especially in relation to giving and caring for the less fortunate. I think that’s what I always loved about christmas – the community spirit and knowing that everywhere people were participating in the rituals of christmas – but now you really can feel part of something bigger and I love that.
