Behind todays advent calendar door is a beautiful illustrated Folio Society copy of All Quiet on the western front.
The Folio Society believe books should be as beautiful as they are interesting and produce gorgeous editions of all sorts of classic books that make beautiful gifts. This copy of All Quiet on the western front is bound in cloth and printed with a design based on a photograph of a bombed street at Fort Souville, 1916.
The book was published in 1929 and was based on the authors own experiences in the trenches during WWI. It is the most famous German anti war novel, and this edition is translated into English by Brian Murdoch.

Somme Mud by EPF Lynch. It’s a great book, not far behind this in the WW1 stakes. AQOTWF is still one of my favourite books ever.
It’s not fiction, but my favorite book this year was “Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can’t Stop Talking.” A real eye-opener. But I also devoured EVERYTHING that Brandon Sanderson ever wrote this year; he’s a fantastic read.

Madam Bouvery, weirldy made me appreciate life more..
I love the Go Between it perfcetly captures the atmosphere of its era.
That’s easy – Miranda Hart’s new book “Is it me?” I giggled and snorted all the way through it. I rationed myself to a chapter a night because I knew I would be disappointed when I got to the end and couldn’t have my daily fix of Miranda any more. One of the things Miranda advocates in the book is ‘galloping’ as a way of relieving stress … I was staying in a hotel in Swansea with my husband the night I read that chapter, and yes, I did gallop down the hotel corridor the next morning, and yes, it was therapeutic and yes, my husband did capture the moment on video .. it was one of those times when I wish technology hadn’t come such a long way; whose bright idea was it to incorporate video recording capabilities into mobiles anyway? Silly idea!
My favourite book this year was Stephen King’s, The Long Walk
All of Dan Brown’s books.
I would have to say this – http://www.amazon.co.uk/Yellow-Blue-Tibia-Adam-Roberts/dp/0575083581

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by far the best book I’ve read in a long time and is worthwhile rereading to pick up bits you’ve missed in the rush to get to the end.
My favourite book was The Paris Wife by Paula McLain which is about Ernest Hemingway wife. The descriptions of 1920s Paris are fabulous. I also loved the Hunger Game trilogy for the strong female lead and the Night Circus which was beautiful. (can you tell this was a hard question for me?!)

Bad Science by Ben Goldacre
50 Shades because every girl needs a little excitment
The Twelve – Justin Cronin
I worked my way through the Lyn MacDonald books about World War One, which are not fiction, but are fascinating accounts of what happened on the battlefields and are filled with the words of the soldiers themselves. I got them second hand – I’m not sure whether they are still in print.
My favourite book this year was probably Miss Marple and Mystery: The Complete Short Stories as I found it really easy to pick up and put down and the stories are just the right length for reading after a long day.
Has to be Jasper FForde – One of our Thursdays is Missing – but for best effect you’d need to start with The Eyre Affair and read through the series. Publisers Weekly described it as “James Bond meets Harry Potter in the Twilight Zone” – the series is clever, funny and absolutely addictive.
I really enjoyed Paper Towns by John Green. It was a Kindle 99p deal of the day thing and I found it really easy to read and couldn’t put it down. Totally different to my normal book choice but I recommend it!
50 shades of grey
My favourite this year was The Snowman by Jo Nesbo. I read all the Harry Hole novels this year and would recommend them to anyone.
I do Love Remarque, and I haven’t read this novel yet
I’ve been re-reading Three Men In A Boat by Jerome K. Jerome and it became a take-it-everywhere book for the summer-2012
The Life of Pi – I can’t wait till see the film but I bet it won’t be as good as the book, it’s amazing & a must read!
I read Nella Last’s War and really enjoyed it, but her later ones are a bit sadder. And I’m ashamed to say I enjoyed the Hunger Games books, at least so I understand what people are talking about.
I’m another hunger games trilogy fan. I was given a kindle for christmas last year and since then I’ve read rather a lot of books – some great and some really awful. I’ve also found that I’m a fan of agatha raisin books, much to my surprise. Its certainly not my usual reading style but that the beauty of the kindle.
Sophie’s World by Jostein Gaarder – a fantastic book, reread again!
Me before you by jojo moyes… Read it in 3 days!
I read a lovely book a few months ago called ‘The Borrower’ by Rebecca Makkai.
It’s a gorgeous book that really highlights how special books can be. A must read!
My favourite book that I have read this year is probably Snow Flower and the Secret Fan.
My favorite book this year has been an old book that a friend let me borrow. His name is Elric and he’s named after the main character in the book. It’s called Elric of Melniboné by Michael Moor. It is set in a far away land much like The Lord of the Rings series and I couldn’t put it down! Tales of love that can not be, magic, a tortured soul, and a quest for revenge. The best part is they are short stories but they all slowly tie in with bits and pieces leading to the end of his quest. I’m on the second book right now and I’m not done with it yet but the first is amazing and the second is really living up to it too!
those mitford girls – is fab x
the Garden of Evening Mists by Tan Twan Eng
The hunger games
My fave book so far this year was Kushiels Scion.
Flashman and the Mountain of Light – full of political in-correctness and brilliant!
The bawdy, caddish adventures of Harry Flashman have entertained me for a few years now. They’re so crammed with history I’d never normally pick up on and this was an eye-opener on the facts of the Indian/British war in 1800s. It’s a book that makes you cry and laugh out loud – not at the same time though.
Great competition!
My fav book i’ve read this year was called the day the angels come. a real story about a wee boy who lost his mother very young and was having to deal with the prospect of his beloved dad dying of cancer
Fictions by Jorge Luis Borges, amazing, mind-bending short stories!
The Book Thief
50 shades of grey
I’m reading The best exotic Marigold hotel and throoughly enjoying it
A cat named Bob
The Sea, by John Banville!
Blood River by Tim Butcher – in the spirit of the original explorers!
“Village School” by Miss Read, or any of her other books. They’re perfect, easy-to-read escapism if you want to leave the modern world for a bit!
I think it was Passage to India by Forster or The Jewel in the crown by Scott (you know, the one the tv-series was based on) I read Remarque’s books at about 15 and I love(d) them dearly. He was a remarkable auther!
The best book I’ve read this year is probably ‘We Need to Talk About Kevin’ by Lionel Shriver. It’s really quite a scary book.
My favourite read this year was ‘The Little Stranger’ by Sarah Waters – a spooky tale set after WWII. A rambling old house is the perfect setting.

Jeffrey Deaver – Carte Blanche
Apocalypse Cow by Michael Logan, joint winner of the Terry Pratchett Anywhere but Here Anywhen but Now award.
I’ve also enjoyed reading Douglas Adams Dirk Gently series. Douglas Adams is ace, always makes me laugh out loud!
Hello, I’ve been a long time stalker of your blog, so I feel a bit of a fraud for only commenting now.
My favourite book that I’ve read this year would have to be Irina Baronova’s ‘Ballet, Life and Love’. It’s pretty much unheard of, but it is the autobiography of a once well known Ballerina. The ballerina – Irina Baronova – had a pretty fascinating life – she lived through the Russian revolution and then two World wars, alongside civil wars in various countries – as well as being married twice, and all the while dancing professionally. A lot of famous faces make an appearance (Grace Kelly, Shirley Temple, Vivien Leigh… to name a few), alongside well known ballet dancers (think Baryshnikov et all). Overall it is a completely fascinating book, and it includes some lovely photos part way through.
Happy Christmas. 🙂
