After being boiling hot for weeks this sudden cool comes as a bit of a shock.
It is, of course, actually still quite warm out there, classic British Summer weather in fact, but after the heat and humidity of the last few weeks it seems a positive chill!
No matter though, as it gives me a chance to wear a new frock that I thought was going to hang unloved in my wardrobe till September. The dress is a 99p eBay bargain that I didn’t think would amount to much. It’s probably 1970s but it has some gorgeous deco detailing at the shoulders, pleating on the bodice and a small pearl detail and fits like a dream. I thought it would look great with fishnets and my new shoes from the Sarenza competition come autumn, so expect to see it again!

Now, I know what you’re thinking, “but Retro Chick, where is your hair!”
Well, you might not have been, but I’ll tell you anyway. Since I discovered the wonders of setting lotion, sponge rollers and/or pin curls messing about with my hair as been a joy that I think I missed out on massively, having chopped it off in my teens and kept it short ever since.
This style is using the same sponge rat (a doughnut from Boots, chopped in half) that I used to do this back roll and this faux fringe only this time I rolled it under into a kind of faux bob. I tried this before with straight hair and it looked rubbish! Curls add a bit of movement and a 1930s feel to the finished look.
You can also see the neckline detail of the dress in these pictures. To be honest I get quite excited when I try new hair things and they work, see, I was deprived as a teenager.
Sadly Mr Chick doesn’t care beyond “That looks nice” so I’m relying on you to get excited with me about hair rats and pin curls.

And I want that dress! I wish I could buy more vintage dresses on ebay… but my size doesn’t get the terribly nice ones 🙁 (but I will keep searching!)

I cant do a thing with my hair. Any curls are flat withing half an hour of releasing them.
I even had a spiral set done at the hairdressers once as I was a bridesmaid. But it didnt set. so they tried to tong it and the curls dropped within the usual half hour, despit having spent 4 hours in the chair and missing all the pre ceremony photos.
This is the first time I’ve tried the bob, so it could all fall out within an hour, though it’s full of grips and spray so it shouldn’t!
The curls will stay in for days now. I just put them in big rolls at night and tie a scarf round my head!
Setting lotion is a magic thing. I swear. My hair won’t hold a hot set, it has to be wet.

Beautiful! I love your hair (did you dye it again recently, the color is fabulous!) I wonder if I could make that work w/ my hair. It’s down to about my waist, though, so it might come out a little too full if I roll it up.
No, it needs redoing actually, I have roots!
It stays quite bright as I don’t wash it too often.
I LOVE your hair (and dress). I have messed around with my hair forever and love playing with curls and hair rats. My friends are always amazed by hairstyles that take me minutes to do – I love that!! Keep playing, it’s such fun, right now I’m having beehive fun with a blend of fifties/sixties looks xx

Love Mr Chick’s response, classic guy! Absolutely love the dress, who the heck do you find such fabulous bargains. Colour is dark yet is it black or plum? it’s seriously pretty dress. Like you hair like this also. I’m also experimenting with my hair a lot lately, after years of having dreadful cuts here in Belgium I swore off the stylists in this land, sorry! So it’s been growing longer and longer, and right now I’m curling it a lot. And I’m loving it.
The dress is dark purple, it’s a lovely colour.

Yes! By the War and Peace show on Saturday I was still sporting this same set. I just put it back in chunky barrel curls at night and tie a scarf round my head to protect them.
That hair colour is gorgeous! works perfectly with simple, fitted dresses…very chic!
