Vintage Hayfever

Has anyone else suffered particularly with Hay Fever this year?

I’ve had hayfever since I was about 6 or 7, so I’m used to wearing sunglasses even when it’s cloudy and not going anywhere without my asthma inhaler. Some years are worse than others, but I use a prescription only medication called fexofenadine that normally keeps it under control. This year though, doubling up with Benadryl and Beconase is still barely touching it. Blurgh.

I didn’t sleep well last night, I have red itchy eyes, a snotty nose, a sore throat and I keep sneezing. I don’t feel very glamorous, so instead of anything interesting this morning I’ve been off hunting for vintage hay fever remedies.

It seems all I need to do is sunburn the inside of my nose and inhale some smoke. It also seems that hayfever has been making a misery out of summer for people for a very long time.

Having said that, maybe the “sunburn on the inside of the nose” remedy isn’t as crazy as it sounds, as whilst on my desperate searches, I found this attractive device which apparently uses “red light therapy”. Lots of people say it works….

Mercury vapour doesn’t sound quite so safe…

Snorting hot tea through my nose while looking at illustrations…..it’s one way of empathising with hay fever sufferers. You might want to add a warning!

      Muahaha! Sorry!

I haven’t ever suffered from hayfever besides this year, it’s horrible! x

I know this isn’t going to make you feel better but mine seems no where near as bad this year. So you can rest secure in the knowledge that when you are old you will be able to put mascara on without it running all over your face!

If you want to try a slightly safer remedy (!) I was told that eating a dessert spoon of honey a day helps….but it has to be locally produced honey, collected from flowers in your region of the country. Apparently the pollen somehow helps your immune system to fight the hayfever allergies. Sorry I don’t suffer from it so can’t say if it works or not….but if you like honey, it can’t do any harm to try it!

    • I agree with Karen about the honey! This last year we’ve been using up honey someone gave us that isn’t local for the first time in a long time (we just don’t use it that much), and it could be a complete coincidence but my allergies were worse this spring than they have been in years. I figure any extra little thing to help, and I’ll try it!

I hear that due to the late spring, all the plants pollinated AT ONCE over 2 weeks. Hopefully that means it will ease off. I have a skin allergy to some pollens – when the trees come out it aint pretty! Goodness knows what they’d coat me with back in the day!

I’m having a really rough time with hayfever this year. Today I sneezed so much, my nose bled. I’m taking loratadine and using haymax. I am noticing a slight improvement with the addition of haymax but night time is the worst. Xx

I have had everything that you mentioned-it ended up being a sinus infection but I still have it esp the throat-ugh I hope it isnt allergies. Geesh summer is beginning in a sneezy way for us both heheh xox

No hay fever, but terrible mold allergy, which is bad if you like old houses, clothes, etc. Modern remedy is Sudafed, if it gets too bad I’ll put lavender herb in a pot of water on the stove and boil, relieves congestion, or cup of hot tea/whiskey/honey works wonders. Feel better!

I’m going to tell you exactly what works! My husband gets horrible hayfever and it really affects his asthma badly. This year when he was at the hospital about his nasal polyps (ewwww) the doc said you should try saltwater nasal solution, and we said will it help his hayfever, he said yeah totally. It is like a miracle. You can buy it in a nozzle type thing in Boots or mix your own with special solution. My OH does it about 3 times a day at the moment, and has next to no symptoms, give it a go! No drugs either :o)

The current heatwave in the UK means increasingly high pollen levels. High pollen levels are a nightmare for hay fever suffers and this year I am hearing of people that don’t normally suffer with hay fever having problems.

My brother has suffered with hay fever for many years, I gave him bee pollen to try yesterday and already he has noticed a difference in just 24 hours.

I also gave my Mum (who doesn’t usually suffer with hay fever) this natural anti histamine, and she said the symptoms have eased in the past 24 hours, since taking the bee pollen.

I taken the bee pollen daily, not for hay fever, but I find it gives me energy. I struggle swallowing tablets, but these are small enough for me to chew.
