Warm Winter Coats

Last week it was capes, this week it’s coats.

The more intuitive amongst you might draw from this the conclusion that Retro Chick is cold, and they’d be right. I can’t think about much else but gloves, scarves and hats at the moment.

A good smart winter coat is a lazy girls essential. Lets face it, for all we know every woman in the picture below could pretty much be wearing holey leggings or bunny pyjamas under her coat, but no one would ever guess because the top layer looks super smart.Ā  Just try not to get hit by a bus.

Vintage 40s Ladies in Coats

You might still have a serviceable coat from last year, I know I do. But if you’re looking for a new one, because you need it, or just because you want one, then I’ve found some lovely coats, both bargain and over budget on eBay and the High Street.

If you need more help staying warm then I have tips on Staying Stylish and Warm and some handy tips on shopping for and buying a winter coat.

On The High Street

High Street coats seem to have suffered from the same shrinking hem syndrome as High Street dresses. Doesn’t anyone get cold knees? I have located some that won’t give you chilly legs.

Long Woolly Military Coat – New Look – Ā£54.99

Practical, smart, reasonably priced. What more do you want?

New Look Smart Coat

Wool Blend Belted Faux Fur Collar Coat with Cashmere – Marks & Spencer – Ā£135

The model looks slightly awkward in this, but in other pictures it looks very nice. Plus the collar is detachable so it’s 2 coats in one.

Marks and Spencer Fur Collar Coat

Wool Mix Shawl Collar Coat – Laura Ashley – Ā£175

Fellow Historical Sauce and Glamourologist Lucy has this coat in a deep teal colour. Every time I see her in it I want to wrestle her to the ground and steal it.

Is it worth losing a friend for? Possibly, but don’t tell her I said so….

Thank you for this very useful post! I was trying to summon the energy to sew all the buttons back on 2009’s coat, but now considering a trip to New Look instead – particularly as o2 priority moments has a 25% discount code at the moment!

I’ve got a winter coat from last year, but as the person I am, I’m choosing to ignore the gianantic rips that I’ve managed to make under the arms….mainly because there’s no way I could sew them up (am a rubbish sew-er) and I’ve not found one I can afford in my size, even though I’ve been looking very, very hard!

I’ve only ever owned one long coat about six or so years ago….it was miltary style, brown in that sort of shade that no-one really would want a coat in but reduced when I bought it so I thought I was getting a bargain and despite that it was a terrible colour, I thought I looked fab in it!

I’ve never actually owned a long coat (shock! horror!) but lots and lots of lovely jackets. I have one from topshop that’s beige with a gloriously huge ruffled neck and a belted waist. I do love the long, black 1940s one though šŸ™‚

I am all set for winter with coats galore! Now.. all I have to do it wait for the cold to actually arrive!! Boooo hooooo – i demand SNOW!

Am liking the black one though šŸ™‚

    Yes my coat is lovely!

It is actually very warm and snuggly. Last year they didn’t sell that well and most of the sizes were still left in the sale (in Norwich at least) for 50% less. I wonder if that will be the case this year as well? Might be worth holding out till the sales.

You’ve discovered my secret. My big red winter coat covers a sea of sins on the school run. Love the H&M trench coat.
